This trail is a popular hiking spot with wonderful views of the ocean, as well as a waterfall and a woody canyon.
Starting in Santa Monica, drive north on Highway 1/Pacific Coast Highway for about 2.5 miles to Temescal Canyon Road. Turn right on this road and drive to the end of it where you can find parking. The traihead is at the end of the parking lot on the left.
From the trailhead, the loop starts on the Temescal Ridge Trail, climbing very steeply (about 1000 feet in 1 mile). At the top of this climb you will intersect with the Temescal Canyon Trail where you can take a side trip about a half mile to Skull Rock (if you stay on Temescal Ridge Trail), or you can go down the Canyon Trail into Temescal Canyon.
At the bottom in the canyon you will find a waterfall and cross a bridge over the stream in front of it. After you cross the bridge you will continue lower into the canyon at a gentler descent and through a woody area.
There are generally a good number of other hikers on the Temescal trails.
There is a $7 parking fee.
No dogs allowed on the trail.
