[edit] Overview

This is a 6.8 mile trail which begins just east of Indian Pond.

[edit] Directions To Trailhead

This trail begins over on the north end of Yellowstone Lake, just east of Indian Pond and 3 miles east from Fishing Bridge Visitor Center.

Parking is available at the end of the road.

[edit] Trail Description

This northbound trail leads through a meadow, across a few bridges and into the forest.

Once it exits the forest, it climbs easily to overlook the valley, the creek and the eastern Absaroka Mountains.

After the overlook, the trail hinges to the right (east) and pushes through a hydrothermal area.

  • WARNING: Do not deviate from the trail while in the hydrothermal area.

After passing through the hydrothermal area, the trail bends to the left (north) and then goes over a creek and up a cut bank (also known as a small river cliff). There are nice views of Pelican Creek from this point.

After continuing along the trial for another mile, hikers arrive at a washed-out bridge, which is the end point/turnaround point for the regular trail. (Continuing past the washed-out bridge leads into backcountry. Backcountry hiking/camping may require permits; check with the park for details.

[edit] Conditions And Hazards

  • WARNING: This trail passes through heavy grizzly bear territory. Hikers should be alert and cautious and follow bear alert protocol at all times (including making noise at blind points and carrying bear spray).

Hikers are not allowed to deviate from the trail at all for the first 2.5 miles.

The minimum recommended hiking group size is 4 people.

The trail is never opened before July 4th and, once it is open, it is only open during daylight hours (0900 - 1900).

[edit] Fees, Permits, And Restrictions
