An interesting hike with great views of Lake Elsinore. Expect to see wonderful wildflowers during the spring and great canyon views year round.
Coming from San Juan Capistrano on the I-5, get off at the Ortega Highway/Highway 74 and drive northeast. After about 25 miles of driving you will pass the El Cariso Campground - continue along until the South Main Divide Road and then turn right. Continue on the South Main Divide Road about 2.75 miles until you reach the Morgan Trail trailhead.
The hike through the Morgan Trail offers oak forests, fantastic canyon vistas, and spring wildflowers. From the parking area, head downhill to the junction with the Bear Canyon Loop after about 4 miles. From here you can head back uphill or you can follow the Bear Canyon Loop trail about 1 mile to its trailhead where the well known Candy Store can sell you some snacks.
Along the way you will have great views of Lake Elsinore.
Depending on the season, there are biting flies that accompany any horses coming along the trail.
This trail is usually pretty empty of other people.
There is very little shade on this trail so bring plenty of water and sun screen.
You will need an Adventure Pass from the Forest Service to park at the trailhead. You can purchase one at any of the ranger stations or many sporting goods stores in the area.
