The hike up to the summit of Lassen Peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park is a unique climb with many different volcanic landscapes and amazing views, both from the top and on the way up.
Coming along Highway 89, you will go north for about 5 miles to the southern entrance to Lassen. From the entrance booth, continue for about 7 miles and then you will find the parking lot on the right hand side of the road. At the far end of the lot is the trailhead.
The trail itself is easy to follow and has very interesting rock formations along the way, all of different colors. The route along the ridgeline is steep but the views are great - if it's clear, you will be able to see Mount Shasta in the distance.
On the ridgeline the wind can be very gusty.
As of 2009, the entrance fee for a private vehicle in Lassen Volcanic National Park was $10.
